March is Women's History Month.  March 8 is International Women's Day.  This Year's Theme is:
Ending Violence Against Women:  Action for Real Results.  www.fightbacknews.org/2006/05/iwd2007.htm

  • In March we brought you a series of programs about Women in Medicine, the Media and Politics.
  • We had some of CT's leading political women at the "21st Century Conversations" table.  Susan
Bysiewicz said she was inspired by former Gov. Ella Grasso. Toni Harp is the only African-Amer. woman
in the CT Senate; Minnie Gonzalez is the only Latina representative in the CT House in 2007!

  • While women are more than 50% of the world's population, and 52% of the US population, they occupy
only 13% of the seats in world parliaments, and 14% in the US Congress.  Among the major
democracies, America has one of the worst records.  In 2007 we are still debating if a woman can get
elected president in the United States.  Israel, India, United Kingdom, The Philipines, Jamaica &
Grenada are just a few of the first, second and third world countries to have had women leaders.  Why
not the USA?  Gender Apartheid is still a factor in the world's leading nation!

  • March 11 - Three African-American female physicians shared their medical & academic experiences

  • March 15 - Seven multicultural female physicians discussed their impact on medicine today

  • March 29 - We looked at the many roles and images of women in the media & the effect they have.

  • April 8 & 10 - Dr. Aldo Peixoto  took a detailed look at the role and functions of the kidney

  • April 19, Drs. from Yale, a mother & her 14 son discussed the Kidney disease FSGS and its effect on
African-Americans in particular.  http://www.chg.duke.edu/diseases/fsgs.html    Click onto this link and
learn how you can find out if you or someone you love is affected with FSGS before it's too late.

  • MAY IS WOMEN'S HEALTH MONTH.  OneWorld Progressive Institute, Inc. made a very special offering
to the Greater NH community.  We presented two public health education forums, and we  offered two
health literacy documentaries.  Also WATCH "21st Century Conversations" every week for the latest in
our efforts to keep the community informed about a variety of health care issues.

  • Documentary #1 - Dr. Forrester Lee explained the Anatomy and Function of the Human Heart.
  • We will examine some of the lingering (2008) medical pitfalls for women- Heart Disease & Stress!

  • May 17:  Health Forum on Heart Disease: Drs. Forrester Lee & Rachel Lampert had A "Heart Health 101"
Conversation  & took audience questions.  Click onto the title in blue above and read the article and the
community feedback on the program.  Copies of both programs are available.

  • Documentary #2 - Oncologists from Yale School of Medicine defined & explained Stages of Breast
Cancer.  These programs aired several times and are now available on VHS and DVD for $15. each

  • May 31: Doctors from Yale Cancer Program discussed Breast Cancer Stages &  answered questions

  • In OneWorld Health Forum titled: Treatment Options for Stages of Breast Cancer.    In 2003 the
diagnosis of Breast Cancer WENT DOWN 7%; the highest single year drop ever!  Doctors believe it is
because women 50+ have stopped taking Hormone Replacement on a long-term basis.

  • However, women still face many health challenges.  The Yale oncologists explained the various
treatment options now available, and two survivors discussed their choices.

  • We will continue to present education programs on various aspects of women's health and the effects of
a male dominated society on the progress and well-being of women and girls.

  • July 19 - We discussed  Mandated In-School Suspensions Parents from NH & WH, the
director on Cmm. from State Dept. of Education & Chair of BOE, Hamden participated.
Parents believe out-of-school suspensions hurt minority students most.  All agreed more
needs to be done to help children succeed academically.

  • In 2008 we will bring you a documentary on the effects of Out-of-School Suspensions

  • We also brought  you our promised workshop on Financial Literacy - "Building Your Nest Egg."

  • Hello Friends & Supporters:

  • June 9, 2007 was 11 years since the program “21st Century Conversations” has been on the air in Greater
New Haven.   In 2004 we added N’Zinga’s Journal (a program for specific audiences) and we incorporated
production and teaching efforts and became OneWorld Progressive Institute, Inc., a 501©3 community
    development, charitable organization.

  • With the aid of several people -- the volunteers who work every month to put and keep the programs on
the air,  the technical folks who help to give us a finish product, and those who serve as board members
and advisors-- we have accomplished several things.  We shared those accomplishments with all of you,
and with the broader community through a live, 10th anniversary TV program, at CTV, 7:30 - 9PM on June
15, 2006.  Watch our programs on your local access TV station.
  • We are growing; please join us, and help to make a POSITIVE Difference.

  • Special thanks to Walter Mann of NHTV, Thomas Castelot of Sound View TV, and all of the other public
access stations for their help and support, and for helping OneWorld, Inc. to get its programs out to the
broader community, and for being kind to "an out of network producer."  To all the student volunteers
from North Haven High School and the wonderful volunteers who come to CTV every month to work on the
programs, 12 years would not have been possible without your dedication to independent TV production.

  • Check our TV Schedule Page for station times; www.7towntv.org gives times for all shoreline stations.
  • Citizens Television is the home station for "21st Century Conversations."

  • You can still order a copy of our 10th anniversdary  program, or any other program.

  • The Citizens Television (CTV) studio is located at 2666 State Street in Hamden. The phone number is (203)
562-2288.  OneWorld also gets significant technical support from NHTV & Walter Mann.

  • 2007 marked another milestone for OneWorld Progressive Institute, Inc.; our flagship television program:
“21st Century Conversations” was been picked up by many other stations in Fairfield and New Haven
Counties.  If you do not see our program on your access station, please ask them to carry it; it cost
nothing for them to get it.

  • Starting Sun. Jan. 6, 2008, "21st Century Conversations" is scheduled to air on CTV, Comcast 26 at 6PM
on Sundays.   We thank all of you who wrote letters and signed petitions, for caring about our work and its
benefits to the community.  If you do not see the program at 6PM, call CTV  at 203-562-2288

  •  The program can also be seen in Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stratford, Milford, Orange and Woodbridge at 8PM
on Sundays.  It also airs on Comcast in all nine Valley Towns, and on Charter Communications 21, in all
14 mid-western towns.  We hope to have it on the air in the Danbury, Bethel, Ridgefield and Farmington
Valley areas, and in other areas of Hartford sometime in 2008.

  • Please help us to achieve much broader distribution of our informative programs.  If you have friends,
relatives co-workers, or associates who live in other areas, please ask them to request  that "21st Century
Conversations" be carried on their local access stations.

  • Once the programs are seen, the feedback is very positive.  Our recent programs Health Care Literacy have
received rave reviews.  A major challenge is to get a higher level of visibility in a much wider market.  With
your support, we hope to do that and to continue making an increasingly meaningful contribution to CT's
    inner-cities in particular.

  • We want to eliminate health care disparities; it is costing us too many young, vibrant lives.

  • Let us all work together to improve the educational skills & knowledge of all of our children; the future of
all of CT & the USA depend on it.

  • Mentoring Initiative: We launched a mentoring initiative in Sept.  2006. We are asking African-
American & Hispanic health care professionals and all who care about improving the future for
poor children to mentor an African-American, Hispanic, or poor child and help them to
recognize health care as a potential career
